SYMA, the genius behind modern-day RC helicopters has designed and manufactured a new “toy” for RC hobbyists, the SYMA F4. The sleek and streamlined helicopter is a 3 channel, fixed pitch (FP) with Flybar (FB), single rotor (SR) with 2.4 GHz wide spectrum radio remote control.

SYMA F4 Design

The SYMA F4 kit comes in a neat package that contains the F4 helicopter, 2 spare main blades, 1 spare tail rotor, a 2.4 GHz radio control transmitter, a 3.7v 150mAh Lipo battery, a blade grip, a USB charging cable, a screw driver and instructions manual. It is available in either red or black.

The SYMA F4 is compact at 21.5 x 4 x 9 cm. It is well-built and fitted with tail stabilizers that are reminiscent of the S107G. Its frame is quite rigid and has side frame panels and landing skids that are one of the strongest in its class. The Lipo battery is hidden in the matte-painted canopy for a streamlined and clean look. To remove the battery, all one has to do is remove the canopy. However, instead of an on/off switch are leads and plug akin to a toy-grade RC helicopter. It has a LED light mounted in front to help in night flights.

Flight Performance of SYMA F4

SYMA F4 is so stable it can hover hands-free without the need to trim and tweak. The 3 channel 2.4GHz radio control is arranged in a Mode 4 configuration which means that the right stick is the rudder and also controls the forward/back movements; the left stick is the throttle. The left stick is more reactive than a coaxial and the fast forward flight, more animated.

The 3rd channel should be able to handle turns easily but some hobbyists who are used to 4 channels have found this challenging. A coaxial heli is symmetrical and balance whereas an SR heli is not. The rotor of the F4 turns one way as the “reflex” force turns the body of the heli on the opposite direction and then countered by the side-pushing motion of the tail rotors. Increasing or decreasing the tail rotor’s speed should turn the helicopter effortlessly but the helicopter is pushed sideways. This problem could be solved though with the use of an aileron control.

Advantages and Disadvantages of a SYMA F4

The SYMA F4 is very affordable. It is excellently built using durable parts. Its 2.4GHz radio control remote has a distance range of about 50 meters. It is fitted with a fish-eye swash plate and has a swappable Lipo battery for more flying time.

However, the SYMA F4 is not compatible with any current hobby-grade radio. Hobbyists used to 4 channel and coaxial heli might find it initially difficult to turn an F4 without aileron control. The F4 is excellently built but it is quite heavy at 38.4g.

Conclusion

The SYMA F4 is a superior upgrade from a toy-grade 3 channel coaxial helicopter. It is affordable and excellently built, and quite intuitive to fly. It is a versatile RC heli that can be flown indoors and outdoors, during the day or by night.
