Design of the SYMA X5C

syma x5cThe SYMA X5C is the twin of X5.  Both RC quadcopters have the same specifications and the only difference is the letter “C” hooked to its model name, which actually stands for camera.  Packed in a neat box are the quadcopter, a screwdriver, main blades, remote control, AC adaptor, charger and instructions manual.

With a dimension of 31 x 31 x 8cm, and a weight of 910 gm, this model is not exactly compact.  It is a 4 channel quadcopter with a 2.4 GHZ radio remote control with a controlling and receiving distance of up to 30 meters or 100 feet.  It has two operating modes to better adapt to flying operations. Fitted under the quadcopter is a 2 MP HD camera. The battery is a 3.7 V 500 mAh Lipo with a USB charging time of 100 minutes and a flight capacity of 6-8 minutes.

Flight of the SYMA X5C

Fitted with a 6 Axis stabilization system, the X5C has a more stable and flexible flight. The innovative 360 Eversion permits the quadcopter to exhibit a continuous 360° roll for perfect action and performance and excellent photos and videos. Though the X5C is quite stable in hovers, speed is lacking. This could be attributed to the fact that the X5C is actually an “explorer” quadcopter suitable for taking photos and videos on flight. However, one can dismantle the blade protectors to lighten the SYMA X5C.

The X5C is perfect for both indoor and outdoor flights. It can fly with and against the wind with not much trouble as long as the top left button of the transmitter is pressed down after matching the frequency.  When taking aerial photographs, the quadcopter must be in a steady flight or in hovering mode. The HD camera works best when lighting (sunlight or artificial) is good.

Pros and Cons of the SYMA X5C

Pros

Equipped with an HD camera, the SYMA X5C is still reasonably priced. Its solid plastic frame is hard yet flexible enough to take-in bumps. The orange and green LED lights aids in navigating the quadcopter especially outdoors and at night.

Cons

The charging time of 70 to 100 minutes is quite long for a 6-8 minute flight.  A replacement battery is a solution to extend flying time but the possibility of motor burnout is real. The motor should be given time to cool down. Another disadvantage of the SYMS X5C is its exposed gears that accumulate dirt and debris which in turn cause the motor to lose power.syma x5c package

Conclusion

In spite of the disadvantages, the SYMA X5C is recommended for RC hobbyists and enthusiasts. It is affordable, solidly built and can be flown both outdoors and indoors, anytime of the day. The SYMA X5C is sure a fun quadcopter to fly!
